PROGRAMME

How long is the programme?

The National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Related Technology) - Level 3 is studied over 39 weeks including study breaks.

When does it start?

Normally there are 4-5 intakes annually across both our Auckland and Christchurch Campuses. Start dates are typically in January or February, your start date will be confirmed in your training agreement.

Where will the training take place?

You can choose to study at either of our two campuses

What are the class times?

Standard class hours will be 0800 - 1500 (Auckland) and 0900-1600 (Christchurch), including an hour for lunch. Class times may vary according to content, students will be advised by tutors in advance.

Is the training centre in public transport range?

Yes. The training facilities are located on bus routes. Visit www.maxx.co.nz in Auckland and www.metroinfo.org.nz in Christchurch to find out how you may use public transport to attend classes.

Is there parking available?

Once all fees have been paid, students are issued secured parking cards. If a student does not wish to pay for the secured parking, off-street parking is also available.

Is employment guaranteed?

Air New Zealand does not represent or imply that students attending the course will automatically gain employment with Air New Zealand or any other company upon completion of the course. However, the Air New Zealand Aviation Institute does facilitate introductions to industry employers, and has a strong placement record.

Study Options

Are all the courses full time – or do you have a part time option?

Currently the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering Level 3 is only available as a full time study programme.

Are places limited?

Yes - there is a limited amount of spaces on our Auckland and Christchurch courses. Enrolments are accepted on a first come basis following successful completion of a pre-entry assessment. Our annual intakes have filled as early as August of the prior year.

How much study is expected outside class hours?

Students are expected to read and research information, complete assignments and prepare for assessments. Students should allow approximately 2 hours per night for this.

What are the total costs of this programme?

Domestic fees are for New Zealand Citizens, New Zealand Permanent Residents who have held this status for 2 or more years, and Australian Citizens who have resided in New Zealand for 2 or more years. For information on international fees please click here

Can I apply for student loans / allowances?

Yes – the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering – level 3 is TEC approved, you will be able to access student loans and allowances if desired. Visit www.studylink.govt.nz for more information or to apply.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications are required to apply?

An ideal background is to have successfully completed Year 12 Math, Physics and English along with a technology subject or a strong interest or hobby in a Mechanical or Electrical field.

The formal entry requirement is a pass in the Air New Zealand pre-entry Assessment.

What is a pre-entry assessment?

The pre-entry assessment consists of a written examination and an interview. View our assessment guide here.

If I am unsuccessful in the pre-entry assessment am I able to resit?

Generally candidates will be asked to wait six months after before retaking.

When and where are pre-entry assessments held?

Assessments are held once a month in Auckland and Christchurch from May – November for entry into the following years programme. Some one-off locations are also held.

Is there a cost to sit the pre-entry assessment?

No - there is no cost to sit the pre-entry assessment

Do Air New Zealand pay for travel to attend pre-entry assessment centres if I live outside of Auckland or Christchurch?

No - applicants will be expected to make their own arrangements to attend the pre-entry assessment.

Can I still get a job if I have a criminal conviction?

Although there is no absolute answer, the chances of employment with a past criminal conviction are very slim. This should be considered before any future plans are made to attend this course.

Please note most aviation employers will require you to submit to a drug/alcohol test as part of your employment/interview process, and then further random testing as an employee.

What qualification will students have when they graduate?

Providing students have successfully completed all the assignments and assessments, they will gain the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Related Technology) Level 3 and the Air New Zealand Certificate in Aircraft Engineering
