A career as a commercial airline pilot is an exciting and challenging prospect.
Today’s airline pilots are often referred to as flight deck managers, a description that reflects their demanding, multifaceted role. From commercial considerations to crew and passenger demands, or weather and air traffic disruptions, today’s modern airline pilot needs the ability to manage all of these issues in addition to demonstrating well-honed flying skills and possessing an in-depth knowledge of modern aircraft systems.
To provide direction and assist prospective future airline pilots choose a training provider for their flight training, the Air New Zealand Aviation Institute has selected five flight training organisations (FTOs) across New Zealand to become partners in developing career training options for aspiring pilots. The Aviation Institute will work with these FTO partners to ensure a future supply of commercial airline pilots is available for the New Zealand aviation industry — including Air New Zealand.
These five FTO partners have been appointed following a rigorous selection process to validate their current training programmes and quality systems and to confirm their ability to adopt airline-styled selection criteria and training standards.

The Aviation Institute’s Flight Training Organisation (FTO) Partners are;
Students wishing to commence flight training with the intention to become a commercial airline pilot are encouraged to enrol with one of the Aviation Institute’s FTO partners. Selection of a training provider is a personal choice and should be made following a review of prospectus or website information that is available from each FTO partner. Geographic location, available programmes or course fees may influence your decision.
By choosing to train with an FTO partner, prospective pilots will be assured they are:
· joining a flight training programme designed to produce commercial airline pilots;
· likely to succeed as they have met airline styled entry-criteria for programme selection;
· going to be interacting with airline personnel;
· Air New Zealand’s preferred low-hour candidates for turbo-prop first-officer positions in times of high demand for new pilots.
Enrolments for domestic students are managed directly by our FTO partners.
